As an extension to my ideas in the referred to blog post I've got an
idea of how to manage "work environments":

A work environment would be a set of appliances you want to be
automatically started when you open a specific kind of object. By
default, a "viewing" and an "editing" environment would be defined for
each object type at the system-wide level. You would also be able to
change environments at the project-wide level and the per-object level.

To change the environment of an object or object type you would:
1: Open an object of that type
2: Open/Close appliances until you have the desired work environment.
3: From the "Appliances" menu choose "Save Environment"
4: In the resulting dialog choose whether to change the system-,
project-, or object-wide domain.
5: Also choose a name for the environment, and whether to use it as
default or not.
6: Press "Ok" and then you are finished!

This would make it very easy to create a work environment that suits you
project.

Questions, comments, and criticisms welcome,
