Rob,
        Yes, it is possible. You will be setting up an "internet server",
yoru base machine conects to the internet via it's modem, then you setup
masqarading on that machine via ethernet, so your other computers on your
private network apear as the base computer(the one with the modem).
Definetly linux is the OS of chice for this type of network :)
