I had a bad experience attempting to install SuSE on my old 486. It was so
painfully slow that I decided that I would never again venture into this
territory. But, I do respect those who have the patience to do something
useful w. old legacy stuff.

Certainly, many distributions are tuned for Pentium and up; but others such as
Mandrake have a 486 option that is, perhaps, less painful and more likely to
succeed.

I guess "Go to Red Hat" really got under your skin. I apologize.
