retarted startx

When I type startx on my laptop, I sits at the command prompt for a good
2 minutes.  If I wait long enough, it will actually start X and things
operate like usual.  This just happened since it has been home.  It was
working just fine Friday at work.  <?!>

Has anyone experienced this and know a remedy?
