You might want to start up a new terminal and check and see what is running
using ps -ax. I have a similar problem x starts but the kde icons take about a
minute to come on. In other words I can't access anything until they come up.
My home directory has a lot of stuff in it and I'm not sure if this is why.
When I try another user such as root it's ok. Try switching to a diferent
user to see if you have the same problem.
