Anything that locks the modem creates a /var/lock/MODEM.lck (maybe just
MODEM) file.  If another application wants to use the modem, it looks to
see if the file exists.  This keeps two applications from using the
modem at the same time.  If you aren't going to use minicom again, just
delete the file (you need to be root).  If you want to swap between
minicom and kppp, you need to figure out how to have minicom kill the
lock file when it exits.  I think ^X might do it, but check with ^H to
see which command is "hang up and exit".
