I'm trying to upgrade my Desktop Linux system [it's long overdue]
and I'm having a hard time.

I first tried to upgrade using the Mandrake distribution. After
several unplesant experiences, I'm now trying to upgrade using Debian.
It's recommended that I gather certain information first. The part that's
difficult for me is the make and model of the video card and the amount of
video ram. Well I know the make [it's Matrox Millenium] but I don't know
the model or the amount of ram. Is there someway I can find it out from my
currently running system? [RedHat Linux version 4.0; no Windows] It
doesn't seem to be in the messages in the bootup or in the proc files or
in the stuff I can access when I enter the BIOS setup. But it may be I
don't know where to look. I also sniffed around in the rc.d files a bit
and didn't find it, but again, I may not know the info when I see it. [I
did a grep ideo * in the directory where the init scripts are and came up
with nothing.]

If I can't find this info, I may try to do the install without it
[the punt and pray approach]. The other two ideas I have are (a) to ask
the folks I bought it from if they have records and (b) to bring the
machine into the shop and ask them to "look and see". Certainly these last
two approaches seem inelegant.

        Any help greatly appreciated.

        Thanks,

        Bob Solovay
