[ "If headhunters who *did* abuse their "terms of agreement" with LUG mailing lists got a serious taste of D.O.S.- reverse-spam-bombing, for one FULL week after *EACH* infraction, they might be smartened up by such lessons ... then, of course, they could be IP-blocked (as a 1st step in the muting process)... and Big Rocks on Cantor+Siegal all over again, from 10,000 feet, btw, just for good measure.

[ Hmm, maybe a fair-posting-"Contract" Agreement / Terms of Use / Things the LUG members and LUG list admin *WILL NOT TOLERATE* on the list, could be on a page, and additionally sent to Every Individual hunter/huntress who requests access to the user membership. Agree [ click here ], or Disagree [ click here instead ] ==> with suitable links beneath the two choices.

[ In addition, ANYONE / ANY COMPANY who violated the Terms, and who might not be fazed by some "mean links" could have their URLs posted on a PAGE OF EVIL SPAMMERS, with links to their page forwarded, not necessarily to entire other LUG lists, but certainly to the admins of our free-beer / open-source comradniks.

[ It is entirely too easy for newbie or arrogant websters to view User Group lists belonging to Online Communities, of whatever size, but certainly comprised of beyond-AOL skill levels, as their own personal FRESHMEAT trolling ponds. Imagining that the GOV in any form, is going to save list members from shabby and/or stupid treatment by the unscrupulous is naive, at the very least. Things have No reason at all to descend to a flame-fest every time yet anOTHER newbie, easy-pickins person comes upon the euglug (or any other) list: one thing that can lead to fewer such events coming to pass is having serious and established Quid-Pro-Quos in place, to be activated by maillist sysadmin, or chapter prez request, et al.

[ "Yep, within extemely limited bounds, yez can post to the group. Blow your chance, and let's see how high your site goes up when the Red Button has to be resorted to." <------------- imaginary convo, not at all directed at Claire S., personally

'before spamming' is the key words here.

I'm inclined to say "OK", but I'll put it to the list for feedback
(cc: Clairemarie, of course).

Well, i'm just this guy, you know... not like I'm in charge or anything in this anarchy we have here... but I say no.

We've kept the volume pretty low and localised so far, which I
think is good. Is this going to ruin that? Is every headhunter on the
planet going to spam us? (Off planet?)

The problem is that headhunters and other job listings sent direct to the list are a real pain. We have managed just fine with occasional forwards of job offers, because someone on this list said 'hey, this is open, go for it.' Why do we need to get it from some headhunter.

I'd guess one could expect flames in reaction to Windows jobs.

The FIRST time a non-linux/non-unix job posting hits this list, I'd request the list admin to block the address. If Clairemarie will swear an oath to only post Oregon jobs with Linux or Unix related skills, I'd live with it, and grit my teeth, since it would on topic for this list.

Is it acceptable to post contract/perm job ads to the mail list for
distribution to the EUGLUG (I work for an IT recruiting firm)? Positions are
primarily in OR, WA and contract.

and, not having met Ms. Samuel, I'm nonetheless pretty sure she's okay (she "did" ask <g>), but the time to nip the Perfect Storm abuse potential for such activities is better looked at up front, not after the LUG addy is all over the national 'get bods here' compilation lists....

REM: If you don't try to keep ppl from walking anywhere they want through your backyard/garage/house, toDAY, and whenever it casually happens, you will have set no precedent for later, when you'll wish you were able to demonstrate that, indeed, you really *don't* want kids using the hobby arc-welding setup in your backyard, when you aren't at home.

REM: Nice ppl won't usually abuse hospitality, because they wouldn't want theirs done in. As the notorious pond-slime Cantor and Siegal demonstrated, what isn't (actively) prevented, is Mandatory(!)(apologies to RAW, HST, and others)
