Install fests, while necessarily helpful, are rather boring. You need exciting
demonstrations showing "why run linux".
For instance Seth once showed us browsing websites with lynx, in console (no graphics)
mode. Yet he was viewing images and pictures! (This may not be "why run linux", but
it was fun.)
Another example may be linux on laptops, things I do with mine, and KBob does with
his. I don't remember the last time I rebooted my laptop, yet I jack in at least
three different places around town, administer my network, do my school work and other
extra curricular activities on it. KBob is much in to wireless networking with his
laptops, and likes to walk around lugs, surfing with no wires bounding him!
Have your more experienced people show off what linux can do, and how they are using
it for their work and play. This can inspire new users to work through any problems
they may currently have, and see something to work towards. Make this a regular thing
so people see (and seek) new things, and so you always have something for the ebb and
flow of new comers.
You want new users to think and say, "hey that's cool, I want to do that." Rather
than, "why is it so hard? it doesn't work. why should I bother? grep?"
