here we go again.

so, redhat isn't the distro for me. i don't like the RPM system (which also
rules out mandrake and a host of other distros...) debian just gives me
headaches nowadays. slackware is inadvertantly (or not) tied up in that bob
dobbs crap and thus is not for me.

LFS is all that's left, save for the various BSD's, of which none have
nvidia support, and plan 9, which i don't want to touch (until i find the
"plan 9' pole"...).

so here's my monthly naive i-want-to-change-linux questions. i am going to
do an install of LFS onto my spare hard drive (if it's worth doing, do it
yourself...) after seeing Mac OS X, i've decided that i really don't like
all of the "four letter wurds" used as a directory structure. it's just
damn unsightly. my command line should be pretty.

1. aside from FHS concerns, what is stopping me from re-naming 'lib' to
'libraries', dropping 'bin' and 'sbin' into one directory called 'binaries',
naming 'etc' 'config', etc?

2. do i simply just need to get the paths right to make this work?

3. i'm not that naive. i'll need to write a script to alter makefiles and
such when compiling. i noticed when installing xmountains that there is a
'Imakefile' file (which re-wrote the paths for the makefile for each
individual system...) which worked quite nicely. does anybody know of a
generic version of said file that can be re-written to work with Justin's
File Hierarchy? or am i on my own?
  a. if i am on my own here, is anybody willing to
help/look-over-shoulder/critique my makefile mangling script?
  b. do any of you honestly think this will work?

4. yes i am going to plan this out. if anybody has any serious suggestions
about re-writing the FHS into something nice and fuzzy and would like to
help or see the end result, please e-mail me.

i am doing my best not to be a whiny bitch about this. if it isn't feasible
from a technical standpoint, i will stick with debian until i get it right.

if it is technically feasible without re-writing code, the time needed to do
all this is not an issue. i am willing to work at it until i get it my way.
the yearly backup is about to happen, so i have no qualms about hosing the
system.

thanks in advance!
