Basically a how to do your own distro from conveniently packaged parts there is some interesting work being done on a successor called Automated Linux From Scratch which would basically build a distro based on a config file. I think they've run into problems on the same issue that everybody else has, namely qualifying and maintaining a useful set of packages in a common format. Debian has probably done best at solving this problem in practice, though not necessarily in theory (ie there may be better ways of doing it but none that have even alpha-level deployment)
