Just for kicks, I untarred OpenBSD's base30.tgz, etc30.tgz, man30.tgz,
game30.tgz, comp30.tgz, misc30.tgz, xbase30.tgz, xfont30.tgz, xserv30.tgz,
and xshare30.tgz in a temporary directory, then copied the GENERIC kernel
there ... `du -sk .` = 280506, about 273MB.

Then "cd usr/local" and untarred pkgs for:
 ORBit-0.5.8
 bzip2-1.0.1
 cdparanoia-3.a9.7p2
 control-center-1.4.0.1
 enlightenment-0.16.5
 esound-0.2.22
 fnlib-0.5
 freetype-1.3.1
 gconf-1.0.7
 gdk-pixbuf-0.10.1p1-gnome
 gettext-0.10.40
 glib-1.2.10
 gnome-core-1.4.0.4
 gnome-libs-1.2.13
 gnome-vfs-1.0.1
 gtk+-1.2.10p1
 gtk-engines-0.12
 imlib-1.9.11
 jpeg-6b
 libaudiofile-0.2.3
 libghttp-1.0.9
 libglade-0.17-gnome
 libiconv-1.7
 libungif-4.1.0b1
 libxml1-1.8.16
 oaf-0.6.5
 png-1.2.0
 popt-1.5.1
 scrollkeeper-0.2
 tiff-3.5.5

now `du -sk .` = 350640, about 342 MB

considering Win98 doesn't have a compiler (and it's actually rare that you
*need* to compile a kernel, since we have ukc), we'll remove comp30.tgz:
% for i in `tar tzf comp30.tgz`; do sudo rm $i; done

now `du -sk` = 301603, about 294 MB

and since our video card is supported by XF4, we don't need the 3.3.6
servers:
% for i in `ls usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_*`; do sudo rm $i; done

now `du -sk` = 272051, about 265 MB for a fully functional system, with
enlightenment/gnome to boot! (And there's still more we can remove, like
the whole misc30.tgz, and XF86Setup ... down to 258 MB ;)

And it installed from a single floppy ....
