You might also like the openoffice.org spreadsheet.  It has come a long way in
the last year, and can read excel files pretty well and write them with some
degree of success.  Openoffice is like StarOffice, but released under a more 
gpl-like license, and without the much-criticized, confusing interface of
StarOffice. 

I like openoffice because it can read msoffice-formatted files with a greater
degree of security--the macro-viruses will presumably break in openoffice or
staroffice.  Also, you can easily export a document for someone who only has 
one of the older versions of msoffice.

What advantage have you found with the xml format?  I think openoffice has 
some sort of xml features, but I can not figure out why I would need xml yet,
especially since most xml I've seen is polluted with binary data.
