One reason could be cable type reduction / organization.  A monitor 
and/or keyboard can act as a hub.  You could plug your mouse into the 
keyboard, the keyboard (and maybe a modem) into the monitor hub and, if 
you don't mind some quality loss, you could plug in a set of USB 
speakers as well.  At the computer the cables would be reduced to 
power, monitor and USB.  That could be nice for someone who wants to 
deal with a minimum of different cable types.

My bet would be that the reported effect you heard about was more 
psychological than real.  A USB gamepad on the other hand could be a 
different story.
