i have a dhcp-configured cable modem, a 5 port switch and two personal
computers. is there a way to have one computer be a gateway AND a desktop
system? i'm sorry, the dhcp thing confuses me (it's really hard to visualize a
firewall without static IP's...)

the setup would look like this :

CM----SW----GW/FW/Desktop1
       |
       +----Desktop2

so, desktop1 acts like a router/firewall (yes i know this may be dangerous. i
have no alternative.) and the other one goes through it. that's not hard to do
(or visualize...) but how do i route/masquerade to a dynamic IP? and how do i
do it with only one NIC in desktop1?

thanks in advance!
