If your desktop1 is also a gateway, I think it would look more like
this...

       SW----GW/FW/Desktop1-----CM
        |
        +----Desktop2

In that setup, you'll need to nics in desktop1.  One for the cable
modem incoming, and one to go out to the switch.  The gateway will get
it's IP from the cable company (static or DHCP), and you can have
either static IPs on the private net, or run a dhcp server on the
gateway.

I don't know how you would do it any other way than that.
