Sweet. What program does "special transparenct patterns and skins..."?
The gimp is indeed used by many people who develop skins for other
programs or window managers... it has full channel control with alpha
layer, so you can manage as many layers as you like (this is also how it
handles animation)... you can flatten (via "export") an image to be able
to save your final product as jpg, gif, bmp etc... I believe png's can
be savedwith an alpha layer, and even jpg's? (anyone know for sure?)
OS X is awesome, although on an older (slower) g3 with less ram it might
seem slower than older mac OS -- if she installs without "classic mode"
I believe it will run faster (since it's only running one OS as a time,
instead of effectively running 2 kernels, afaik) but then she won't be
able to use all the same apps she's familiar with... a lot of stuff has
been ported to OS X, though, and then you get access to ALL SORTS of
unix/bsd software, including X windows, the gimp, etc etc etc.
As far as a good word processor for your sis: you'd probably want
something native to OS X... using KDE or Gnome will only add to the
memory requirements... although it should be pretty seamless and a
VERY NICE working environment. I see OS X as the new ideal for
computing user interface. Have fun!
