One of the bigger differences between mandrake 7.2 and 8.2 is X4. Ive found that X4 doesnt like most of my video hardware... and use X3.3.6 often. X3 is likly installed on your system too.. you can use it if you want. xf86config3 will configure X3 for your system, or you can use the X config gui that comes with mandrake to chose x3, x4, x3w/3D, x4w/3D (I think you may have to be in "expert mode" to chose the x server...)
