Ive been using fluxbox with my gentoo install.  It's based on blackbox
and adds tabs and some of the configuration can be done through the
menu.

No, it's not a security thing.  As far as not having sound support, unless
you rebuilt your kernel, you probably just need to load the right modules.
I think Mandrake would be happy to have a good portion of the desktop
market.

Probably either DrakConf is broken, it can't configure your soundcard, or it
doesn't know how to configure your soundcard.

Can you 'modprobe sound' as root?  What is your laptop and sound chip make
and model?  Did you look up either at http://www.linux-laptop.net/ ?
