Be sure to look over the release notes:

  http://www.debian.org/releases/woody/i386/release-notes

The "apt-get dist-upgrade" process handles dependencies quite well, but
it doesn't handle "recommends". This can lead to your losing some
packages along the way and you might need to reinstall them after the
upgrade. Hard core Debian people use dselect or aptitude to handle
these problems interactively. But, both of those utilities are bears
to use.

The release notes will explain how to capture your system state prior
to doing the upgrade, how to track all changes made during the upgrade,
and how to determine what packages may have been lost in the process.
But, if you don't follow through with what they recommend before you
start, that information is lost and you'll just have to piece things
back together as you run across package that have gone missing.
