yeah... it was the i2c thing... once I added that, I was able to add the bttv, 
and ohter associated modules... maybe later Ill try to compile it all in the 
kernel.. 
        Ive gotten the laptop going now... Its doing make dep .. It looks like it 
will compile now. I was missing some libraries (needs ncurses for make 
menuconfig... ) I found the hermes pcmcia module says it works with prism2 
chips (my wireless nic...) we'll see if it will atleast get the device 
functioning! I really want to get the hostap_cs module working, as It will 
enable some nice features that are built into the card. 
        I had to remove the 2.4.19 source and use the 2.4.18 source only, later Ill 
try to replace the 2.4.18 with 2.4.19, but I think it will fail to compile 
properly... the README says not to put your 2.4.19 source in your /usr/src 
directory, rather you should put it in userspace...
