It's just another layer of protection.  If you're the only user and
you don't have any services enabled, it's probably not of much use.

Oh, well.

Really, the best thing to do if you're interested in security is
learning how the network works.  IMO, _Building Internet Firewalls_,
while slightly dated, is a good intro to internet security partly
because it explains TCP/IP in the beginning.
