(-f) is only if you're borrowing broadband :) You'll want to start with "emerge -up system" to find out what you need then "emerge -u system" to get it. Once "system" is done and you've got time to spare then go for "world". "world" will also pull in everything you need for "system" if you just want to get it done in one shot.
