Excellent point, Bob. I'll let those with some [ie, any] experience in the 3d-creation domain name that; personally, to describe my own intentions, I'm seeking a sort of "AV-dorks" list, a mimicry of the group I used be part of in high school, helping out around the AV room. Which meant all sorts of menial tasks which involved learning about the technology, sharing insights, rumors, and training in new audio-visual technologies, as well as hanging out with a variety of geeks/nerds/dorks with similar interests but often different views and experience levels.
In practical terms, I'd expect topics range from basic playback through creation, conversion, and streaming, etc, of any audio, visual, or mixed medium -- including multichannel operations for those doing security or other more advanced applications. For instance, cluster displays are getting more attention recently, and would be a fabulous project. I'd be interested in, say, coordinating with the local LTSP participants, to see if that project has roused interest in such applications of the Free software as this (thanks to LTSP, much infrastructure for a small low-end clustered display project is already in place). Well, I know I don't make many in-person EUGLUG meetings, but I do keep pretty busy managing and growing my client-base, and am interested in doing some cool project in the community, aside from the wifi collective that is brewing. I appreciate your time taken, reading my lengthy rants, and hope that folks get a feeling of positive potential from these ideas. Be well, Ben PS - reply to the list-thread or me personally if you want to pursue this actively!
