If you haven't tried this, try the following:

Jumper the drive to be a slave and then plug it into a working machine.
Set it differently than it was placed in the computer; i.e., if the
drive sat flat in the case, put it on its side.  Fire up the computer
and tap the case of the drive *very* lightly with the handle of a
*non-magnetized* screwdriver.  You may get it to spin enough to get the
data off.

After you're done, replace the drive with one that says *Seagate* on the
cover-- Quantum/Maxtor hard drives suck.
