That doesn't sound right.  Legacy Soundblasters have a driver that 
starts with "sb" and the Ensoniq Soundblasters have a driver that 
starts with "es."

It's possible that the "emul" driver is trying to drive your 
on-board sound chip.  Are you sure you have it disabled in CMOS?

If your soundblaster is a legacy (i.e., ISA) card, you will need 
to run a little program called "sndconfig."  It's not installed 
by default in any of the distros that I use and probably isn't in 
Mandrake either, so you'll have to find it & install it.  It has 
a little bonus:  as a soundcard test, it plays a recording of 
Linus explaining how he pronounces "linux."
