Sorry, my poor tired brain was functioning at only half power. What I should have said 
was that users can login to a Windows box and authenticate to the samba server. I can 
add users and machines to the domain using usermgr.exe and that all seems to work 
except for the fact that the logon script is never run.

Yup, the machines are part of the domain.

pdbedit is smbpasswd on steroids.
