I haven't tried 2.6.9, it's only been out a few weeks and since I have to
patch the kernels, it generally takes me a while to get around to trying
the latest.

According to the thread I was following on the USB problem I had with
2.6.8, this problem dates back at least a couple of kernel revs, though
what did and didn't work changed from one rev to the next. My other major
problem of power management by all accounts has been broken (i.e.
extremely unstable) throughout the 2.6 series (of course 2.4 doesn't do
ACPI either).

I suppose I'll have to give 2.6.9 a try, but since the main reasons I want
to use 2.6 are ACPI (particularly saving state to disk so I can power up
where I left off) and hoping for a fix for the occasional USB 2.0 hard
disk problems under 2.4 kernels, it has been a big disappointment so far.
Other quirks I have seen while irritating, I can live with, the biggest
ones are that on several occasions X has locked up for something like 10+
seconds (no mouse or keyboard response and the disk drive goes nuts), and
music playback will sometimes get all broken up (I've had it last for
minutes), so presumably their virtual memory management still needs some
work.

FWIW
