I first learned about Fear, Uncertainty, & Doubt early on in the FOSS vs
MS discussion.  In one of the articles I read there was a classic case
of computer FUD: why we suffer power supplies in computer cases vs the
perfectly good power supply from the monitor.  It would be hilarious if
it wasn't sad. 

If your interested, and I can find it, I will send it along.
 
Of course the greatest case of FUD was perpetrated By Andrew Carnegie
during his successful cornering of the Steel market and involved
"homogeneous steel."
