I'm looking at GPS units, and would like to hear about anyone's
specific experiences with the data capture side of GPS, specifically
aiming to boil out a brand or feature recommendation that could guide
me. I've already found at least one app. that claims to be a fairly
universal translator [1] for different vendor data formats. But don't
have much direct experience with getting the different flavors of GPS
unit to talk to workstations.

The main choices seem to be Garmin and everything else, having
recently heard some news about Garmin's USB models [2] that makes me
leery ( I don't like giving money to someone's world domination plan
); I'd like to hear about alternatives.

One feature I've been looking for that doesn't seem to exist, is the
ability to record the orientation as well the location in the same
waypoint. it seems to me that if a unit can offer bearing to next
waypoint, it should be able to record a bearing in relation to some
fixed point,no?

Anywho, I've barely started researching this topic [3] and I'm looking
for any advice and suggestions you all might have.
