My personal bent is to use Gnome, mostly because it stays out of my way. KDE just rubs me the wrong way, it's icons are oversaturated and it's presence -- ergonomic feel is too obtrusive for me to be comfortable working in that environ for any length of time. That said I think all GUI's suck, mostly because they use bad metaphors to hide details that can be important, and in so doing create unnecessary confusion about what is actually happening. (Nautilus's spatial file system for an instance).
