Yeah, sounds like a flaw in Gentoo. (And the reason I stopped using it
actually..)
Debian-derived systems have had that problem pretty much resolved ages
ago, to the point that when there was libc5 -> libc6, you just installed
libc6 and a few packages that used it. As more packages were built
against it, libc5 become more obsolete, until it was no longer required at
all.
