my /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf has only one line:

send host-name "ubuntu";

do I add a line/value to override a default 1 minute setting?

Hm, mine has a bunch of defaults defined in it. Odd. Any rate, the line you want to add is:

timeout 10;

To set your timeout to 10 seconds. Obviously, change "10" to whatever value you like. There is a lot of stuff you can control that can be quite useful in certain situations. For more details "man dhclient.conf"  from a shell.

p.s. Quentin - sorry I emailed you off list by accident...

No Worries. :D
