Matt,
        I suspect that the eth1-eth2 problem is related to the laptop coming
out of powersave or sleep mode.  Did you shut it down fully before you
left?  or just close it up?  As for the slow login, you want to go look
at the file /boot/grub/menu.lst or something like that.  please check
and make sure that the entry irqpoll is added to the end of the line
which launches the kernel.  

If you didn't power your notebook down before you left last night, you
might try shutting it down completely and powering back up to see if the
problem remains.  One of the notorious difficulties with Linux Laptops
has been getting the sleep and recover process to work correctly.
