I have a few Maxtors that do this wierd random spindown thing. then you
go to write data to it and it takes a second to spin up.. Im using them
on a small ATA SAN.
I've also noticed that , and especialy with Maxtors, there are new
settings for these drives that run the drive in "quiet mode" or
"performance mode" - performance mode is much more rippin fast - but
man it makes the disk churn really loudly - anyways... the Maxtors seem
to have a bunged up setting when on "auto" which is the default - I've
had to hard set mine one way or the other. and.. in order to set that
at least in cases where I have done that its in the Computers BIOS. So
some Maxtors I have had problems with in one system run perfect in
another since I could hard set that setting. My current wintendo game
box has one Barracuda - and one Maxtor 160G - that would not run well
in another machine.
hope this helps.

So... I had to drive to pdx last week, and i figured i'd check fry's for
sata disks, since i wanted some, and didnt want to deal with rebates or
shipping and all that mess.
So... I find they have maxtors 200gb sata drives for $90, so i get a
couple... woo hoo... maybe i'll get a sata raid 0 going, then throw in
my other 2 maxtor 200gb ide drives and do raid 1/0 or 5 or whatever...
lots of options and fun testing ahead!!!
so after fussing around and having problems over the last week, i
determine that one of the brand new sata disks has a problem... i dont
know what it is, but it hangs sometimes, and fsck finds bad blocks on a
freshly formatted partition.
So... I just got off the phone with fry's and my options are:
1) return it to the store (which means gas$$$ + driving all day)
2) mail it back to fry's (which means hassle of packing it all up, and
paying for postage and all that hassle at the P.O.)
3) return it to maxtor (same hassles as above + online hassle).
since im not driving to wilsonville, its a pain in the ass, and im
going to have to wait for shipping.
Im thinking the whole raid thing isnt worth the hassle anyway, and i
will probably just use the drives as regular drives... maybe i can just
make due with a effed up brand new disk??? Ive tried the maxtor
utilities, and nothing on it (that will run with sata drives) will fix
it.
Is there something can do to repair it? ( like write zeros to it (dd
if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda) or something?)
On a side note, I think the $20 2.5" usb drive enclosure doesnt seem to
work either! sigh... I hope the $20 pci wifi card works!!!!
fry's was not a happy stop for me :(
