IMO, the GPL says, "I don't really believe in Open Source, so I will force people to comply, because they probably don't believe in it either." or, "I think people will only take from me." whereas the BSD license says, "I fully believe in Open Source, and I believe others truly believe in it too." or, "I think people will reciprocate my good will."
