Got the box at home and Linux installed - thought I'd report in with how
things go. If this bores people just let me know...
Toby and I have formed our own little unofficial UG called TMUG
(Toby,Matt User Group) with the idea of alternating weeks working on his
box/my box. We set goals to work towards and also plan on randomly
selecting items from "100 Linux Hacks"....
What we learned last weekend is that he's got a better grasp of the
bigger picture and networking stuff, whereas my 'strength', relatively
speaking, is in day-to-day, hands on stuff.
Snagged an HP Pavilion 600mHz box for home use... put Damn Small Linux
on there w/o problem, but couldn't get the runlevel to go to 3 rather
than the GUI... in the process of poking around the GUI it kinda got
trashed, so decided to try another distro...
Went with FreeBSD and it choked my monitor, then PocketLinux had some
problems, and maybe another distro or two as well... happened to have
FC4 laying around and got it going, maxing out at runlevel 3... no GUI
crutch for this kid....
Both DSL and FC connect up to the net without any tweeking on my part
which kinda surprised me... but I'll take it...
Added some users and am now working on setting up Samba....
Toby is doing the same, but rather than doing the Custom install where I
had to pick and choose all the crap I wanted (and didn't want), he went
with the Minimal install and plans on building from there... I think I
prefer his approach so might be starting from scratch - we'll see...
