Have you umounted the drives before you pull them? That could cause
the problem. Also, can you mount both simultaneously using a USB hub?

Yes -- and to both Allen and Jim,
Please inspect, and also post what the device-relevant lines say of
/etc/fstab
(how devices *will be* mounted by default)
and
/etc/mtab
(how the stuff *is* actually mounted when plugging/unplugging)
You can (and should) tweak /etc/fstab , but leave /etc/mtab alone.
