I know this is contrary to what we all want, but...

Converting my IBM Thinkpad 600x to Windows to replace a crappy old generic p.o.s.

It had Ubuntu on it but I'm trying to install Win98 to run our application, just like the old one.

The Win98 install, Setup, Format and FDISK all fail to want to deal with the hard drive.

Ran SpinRite on it and it did find some errors, all recoverable.

When trying to boot the Win98 install CD, I get this message and a frozen machine:

GRUB Loading stage1.5.

BRUB loading, please wait....
Error 17

Research says that this means the Grub loader doesn't know what to do with the disk it's running on, or something like that.

I don't want Grub anymore anyhoo, so how can I get around this to get back to (trying) installing Win98 ?
