If you want to access the server from many clients, then you'll want a
DNS server. Setting up a DNS server is tricky, but maybe your home
firewall/router has one built in. In any case, add the host/IP
address pair to the DNS server. There are a million different DNS
servers out there, each with its own admin interface, so feel free to
ask about a particular server if that's what you need.
My ActionTec gizmo is set up as the DNS server. I'm not so sure I can
get into it and reconfigure it... I'm not sure what I would tell it to
do even if I could... Actually, there is a browser interface to it -
there must be some DNS options I could check out...
You sure about this? I believe it is set up as DHCP, but DNS?
I have a CD with the user manual for the ActionTec GT701 DSL Modem.
But I'm in Corvallis, so its a bit far if you need one.
My ActionTec is configured to be transparent. Peak.org provides
DHCP, DNS and whatnot. So I don't have experience that will help
here.
BikeFriday certainly already has an internal DNS server(s). To find
it, type "dig any-existing-server.bikefriday.com". Look near the
bottom for "SERVER:".
DNS is a big topic.
That's kinda my bigger issue besides getting it working... I have it all
nice and pretty at home then when I bring it inhouse it falls over....
