What you want too do is called transcoding. This link from a google

). Takes you to the mythtv.org documents / how-to section. Mr O has
mentioned with out encoding / decoding hardware. Your CPU usage
will be higher because you will be doing software encoding from MPEG-2
too what ever codec your transcoding too. Due to dual core CPU
technology, encoding / decoding acceleration hardware that is
supported under what ever OS you are using. You will not tax your CPU
as much as having one CPU or no hardware acceleration.

PS - BTW, anyone know if the "MCE" models are any different from a
linux-user's perspective? And this 1.5-yr-old review says the 250 is the
same as the 350:

Looks to me like the MCE models have more outputs, and that *all* wintv-pvr
models have the mpeg encoder... and that the 350 and 500 (and usb2) are the
only wintv-pvr models with an FM tuner.
