Since we're talking about wireless card rec's, I'd just like to add that I've had good luck with anything that is Intel or Atheros based. I have a cheapie ($15) PCMCIA card I got from Fry's that works really well that is Atheros based. It is an Airlink 101 AWLC4030, a "Super G" model that supposedly supports up to 108Mbit (AKA Full duplex G). They also make a PCI card that has this same chipset on it. For what is practically a "house brand" card, I have been impressed with it.
I too run both wired and wireless networks in my house. Basically the rule of thumb I use is that if a computer is going to be "permanent" wherever it is, needs reliable bandwidth, or I'm likely to be doing anything "important" with it, it gets a wired connection. The wireless is just for convenience with laptops and guests and whatnot. I also have it wide open, but my router box only allows traffic from the wireless out to the internet, and I keep a pretty close eye on who is using it. Next step is to play with a captive portal and traffic shaping on it... -- -Regards- -Quentin Hartman- _______________________________________________ EUGLUG mailing list [email protected] http://www.euglug.org/mailman/listinfo/euglug
