Greetings,
I have a Gforce FX 5900 Ultra card. So the hardware end is taken care of.
To make your card all that it can be, you really need to use nVidia's
drivers. The only issue is that they are closed source. You need to
decide if that is a problem for you. If it's not, [1] has instructions
for installing the drivers.
In the past, I was able to have Gnome running over Enlightenment. Now,
I want to run KDE over Gnome. The Distro is Mandriva 2006. I have a
Gig of ram so memory issues shouldn't be a problem.
Sorry, haven't used Mand* in a long time. You should just be able to
install KDE from the package manager, but that I will leave to you and
google. Now, you don't run KDE over Gnome. Gnome is a Window Manager
that runs over a like enlightenment, MetaCity, etc. KDE is also a
window manager but I believe it includes it's own, built in, desktop
manager (someone correct me if I'm wrong). So you want to do is to
install a different Window manager that will run along side Gnome. Take
a look at [2] for a discussion of the differences or just google for
"window vs desktops managers" and start reading.
