Another note just to add my $.02. KDE and Gnome are both Desktop Managers.
The window Manager Gnome uses by default is sawfish. Once upon at ime gnome ran on top of enlightenment by default, but then they decided they wanted a window manager they controlled rather than using one which was outside of the control of the desktop group. thus sawfish was born. Other choices for Window managers that gnome can use are: IceWM, WindowMaker, AfterStep, and Enlightenment. More will work, but they may not support all of gnome's features. The window manager KDE uses is KWM. Also a project developed by the same folks doing the desktop manager. a great site to visit to learn more about the variety of window and desktop managers for linux is: http://xwinman.org/ -Mike The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds the most discoveries, is not Eureka!
