What Linux version is going to pick up those SATA drives on installation. XP requires the drivers on a floppy at the start.

I did load all the latest board drivers, per a earlier email. Half of these peripherals are scrounged parts, so they are unreliable. I will put some better parts in this system.

I got the PCMark free version. It provides a lot of detail. It wants to have some extras added: ActiveX 9, Media Player 10, etc. I let it load ActiveX 9. Should I go for the whole enchilada or what? Think the commercial version is worth $19.99?

3DMark is mainly for graphics though it'll push your CPU a
litte. PCMark is for general benchmarking. 7byte makes a program
called HotCPU which will stress the CPU for as long as you like
running calculations. I had another one at some point but have
since lost it. memtest86 for memory testing since that is best
done outside the OS (especially Windows). Crucial is lifetime
warrany if you find it to be your problem.

Get all your latest drivers updates and BIOS too. Be sure to
install the proper Via 4in1 driver which may help with some
issues.

That be all,

Oops! Spoke too soon. System reboot while playing a DVD!

This DVD combo has been flaky in other systems and I'm
concerned about that crucial memory. On the whole I think things will be ok. I've got to get some benchmarking utility in here. 3DMark2000, is that a good one for XP or what are you using?
