I second the recommendation for Truecrypt. I'm currently working on
deploying a bunch of USB sticks with it on it in my company. It's a nice
piece of software. One caveat to be aware of is that the "traveler mode"
will only work on a computer that either already has Truecrypt installed on
it or you have admin rights to. If you need to access your encrypted data on
a computer where neither of things statements are true, you need to use
TCExplorer, http://sourceforge.net/projects/tcexplorer . There is some
debate amongst the Truecrypt community as to whether one should use TCE or
not. It effectively opens your TC container like a zip file, and allows you
to drag and drop files to and from the container. It's usable if you must
get at your data, but it breaks a lot of security rules, so the real
"hardcore" sec guys cry real loud when someone suggests it. For the common
case though, it's a real useful tool.
