This doesn't apply to people who are starting from scratch or those who have an unbootable windows machine so if you are trying to keep your tutorial generic it's not applicable.

That said...

People who want to try linux and are running windows can combine most of the benefits of "Try It Without Switching" and "Take the Plunge" by using wubi.

http://wubi-installer.org

From the wubi website:

Wubi is an officially supported Ubuntu installer for Windows users that can bring you to the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other Windows application, in a simple and safe way. Are you curious about Linux and Ubuntu? Trying them out has never been easier!

I've used this several times now and it works as advertised. No iso downloading needed, no cd burning required, no bios adjustments needed, only a little user input needed. The result is a dual boot machine that lets you boot windows or ubuntu. Additionally, ubuntu can be completely uninstalled from within windows as if it is a windows app.

Requires minimum of 5gb free disk space.

I recently was asked about installing Linux. The girls asking
are not in Oregon, so I can't do a hands-on install. I looked
around on the web (including euglug.org) and wasn't entirely
satisfied with what I found for tutorials. So I started a new
one. I am very interested in feedback.
