I hear you on the difficulties in supporting something you can't run yourself. Wubi comes with warnings that it's not for production use, or at least did. But its advantages over a live CD as a demonstration vehicle include: [i] with Ubuntu living on hard disk rather than CD it's much faster; and [ii] apps installed after loading don't have to reside in memory, as with a live CD distro. So it's faster and its configuration more durable.
