My radiation detector is a http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9848. You can
read a review here -
http://www.best-geiger-counter.com/geiger-counter-kit.html It is about $150
we are working on a plan to get them available for less via bulk order.

It is supported by linux by default, plug it in, turn it on, cat
/dev/ttyUSB0 and you are watching Geiger-Muller tube events. It does not
have support for specific isotope monitoring other than coming with a
removable protective filter on the tube end that blocks alpha particles.

If you have any ideas for what information would be useful to provide from
such a device, I'd appreciate it, as I'm currently specing out my radiation
monitoring software.
