I realize some people may not be aware of the full history of this list, so
let me explain. About three years ago, Larry Klaes published an article in
an online newsletter I edited at the time about the exploration of Europa
and the role that interested people could play in designing a "Europa Ocean
Explorer". (The article is still available at
http://www.spaceviews.com/1998/04/nssnews3.html .) The feedback from that
article led to the creation of the web site and mailing list to discuss
those issues (which I hosted as a favor to Larry, a good friend of mine who,
unfortunately, is offline right now while between jobs.)
I get to deal with all the technical aspects of running the list (including
handing bounce messages when subscribers' email addresses become invalid, as
well as removing people who are unable or unwilling to follow the automated
unsubcription instructions.) I don't mind doing this, or volunteering the
disk space and bandwidth, if this list remains focused on its original
purpose. When this list becomes a general free-for-all, driving away people
who want to only discuss Europa, then it becomes a problem. Hopefully, the
creation of the new 'astronautics' list by Jason Perry should provide a new
and more constructive outlet for off-topic discussions, leaving this list to
its original purpose. (And thanks to Mr. Perry for taking the initiative to
create the list so quickly!)

I'm not sure what you mean by "website" above, although I'll assume that you
are referring to this mailing list. Again, the purpose of this mailing list
is for discussions specifically regarding Europa and missions to it, not
"about subjects which generally involve some aspect of space technology or
development." I don't think this should be a problem for any member of the
list to understand and follow.
